As someone who is not a member of the Davis College, or involved in agriculture at all for that matter, this course presented a unique challenge of learning-on-the-go in order to authentically capture the unique and vital world of agriculture. This was an exciting opportunity for me, as I felt like I was at the point in my photography journey where I could really test myself, knowing the skills that I possess, to capture something outside of my realm of expertise. I know my photographic style. I tend to enjoy shooting wide and I’m dang-sure a sucker for epic, hero shots, whether it be landscapes or intense moments of action. What this course helped me navigate however, was the soul that was felt inside of these moments. This wasn’t like any other field class I had taken where we all raced into the van in an effort to chase light, not to say that wasn’t a part of what we were doing, but we were there, really, to capture a way of life. A way of life that brought together generations like rungs on a ladder. A way of life that involved the intertwining of man, land, and animal with the sole purpose of being providers. This collection of images focuses on the way of life that is held dear by so many people in this part of the country. From showcasing legacy, tradition, action, and the beauty of the American Southwest, my style of photography has evolved during the span of this course to include tiny moments of heart that are encapsulated within the wide realm of agriculture.
